COPD Experts Meet to Discuss Immediate Steps to Improve Patient Care

July 7 2010 - Today, over 100 of England’s top primary care respiratory healthcare specialists are meeting to discuss the way forward in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) management, a condition that kills more people every year in the UK than bowel, breast and prostate cancer. Discussions about the immediate changes needed to improve patient care are in light of the recently published updated National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) COPD guideline and anticipated National Strategy for COPD, expected to be made available later this year.

World Health Organisation approves second Cervical cancer vaccine by GlaxoSmithKline

The World Health Organization has approved a second cervical cancer vaccine, this one made by GlaxoSmithKline, meaning U.N. agencies and partners can now officially buy millions of doses of the vaccine for poor countries worldwide.

First case of drug resistant (Tamiflu) Swine Flu

Roche Holding AG confirmed a patient with H1N1 influenza in Denmark showed resistance to the antiviral drug Tamiflu (Oseltamivir).

Other medication that can be effective in treating swine flu is zanamivir or Relenza, made by GlaxoSmithKline.

Swine flu update: Government changes strategy from containment to outbreak management

Speaking this morning, Andy Burnham, the Health Secretary, and Sir Liam Donaldson, the Chief Medical Officer, said that there were hotspots where swabbing and lab confirmations of the virus now put an unjustifiable strain on time and resources. These areas, including the West Midlands and London, are now shifting from the containment phase, which is led by the Health Protection Agency, to outbreak management, led by the strategic health authorities and local health trusts.
