Northern hemisphere countries have so far ordered more than one billion doses of swine flu vaccine, the World Health Organisation said Tuesday.
This intense demand coupled with production delays could create shortages, forcing governments that are preparing for a second, possibly more deadly, wave of flu in the fall to make hard choices about who to vaccinate first, experts said.
"Pandemic vaccine orders put in by northern hemisphere countries stand at over one billion," WHO spokeswoman Melinda Henry told AFP.
Plans to fast-track the swine flu vaccine have been attacked by the World Health Organisation.

The University of Maryland School of Medicine will lead a research study on an experimental vaccine to prevent swine flu.
The school’s Center for Vaccine Development will participate in a nationwide network of vaccine evaluation teams funded by the National Institutes of Health.
Starting in August, the clinical trial will enroll as many as 1,000 adults and children at 10 centers to evaluate the safety of the vaccine and measure its ability to stimulate immune responses to the H1N1 influenza virus.
The government and vaccine makers are seeking thousands of volunteers, from babies to the elderly, to roll up their sleeves for the first swine flu shots — to test whether a new vaccine really will protect against this novel virus before its expected rebound in the fall.
